ERITREA: EXTENSIVE CAMPAIGN TO ROUND UP CIVILIANS UNDERWAY

Radio Erena: 31 March 2021

The capital, Asmara, and other parts of Eritrea continue to witness extensive campaigns of round-ups and detentions of its inhabitants.

The latest round, which has been underway for a week, follows an announcement by the Eritrean government that it plans to reopen schools in April after they had remained closed for almost one year in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Although round-ups and detentions are frequent in Eritrea, the public have been concerned by the latest round as it comes at a time when the government has deployed its forces to the conflict in Tigray.

And concerns continue to rise that these detentions will intensified further once schools reopen, sources say.

With over 8,000 troops deployed to Tigray, more than 2,000 soldiers from the Eritrean army are believed to have been wounded in the conflict.
