ETHIOPIAN SECURITY FORCES CONDUCT DOOR-TO-DOOR RAIDS IN ADDIS ABABA AND DETAIN ERITREANS

Radio Erena: 29 March 2021

Ethiopia’s security forces have been conducting door-to-door raids in Addis Ababa and detaining scores of Eritreans, according to Erena sources in the Ethiopian capital.

The two-day operation that targeted Eritreans was carried out in Addis Ababa’s Yeka Bedu, Lega Taffo, Haya Hullet, Haya Arat, Arebsa and the Jemo And areas.

Although it remains unclear why Eritreans are being targeted in the latest rounds of detentions, many believe the operations are probably aimed at hunting down Eritreans living in Ethiopia, and who oppose Eritrea’s PFDJ party.

It is also worth noting that the government of Ethiopia continues to deny exit visas to Eritrean refugees that had been due to travel through the resettlement to the third country or family reunion programmes.

Some sources also say the latest stop-and-search as well as house raids targeted Eritreans that had escaped to the Ethiopian capital after fleeing from refugee camps in Tigray.
