Ethiopia detains three members of one of the most popular opposition parties known as the Semayawi [Blue] party, for allegedly attempting to cross over to the neighboring Eritrea, confirms Ethiopia’s ‘The Reporter’ newspaper.

According to The Reporter, the detained individuals, who have been serving at various administrative levels of the opposition party that is set to run in the May election, were identified as Berhanu Yared Tekle, Eyersusalem Tesfa, and Fikremariam Asmamaw.

Spokesman of the party – Yonathan Tesfay confirmed of the detention of his party members though, he said, his party doesn’t have any knowledge of the reasons for the arrest.

In the wake of the upcoming May election in the country, Ethiopian authorities had similarly arrested two residents of the town of Mekele for allegedly having a connection with the Eritrean-based Tigray Peoples Democratic Movement [TPDM].

Eritrea and Ethiopia have been accusing each other for years for harboring, arming, and providing bases for each others oppositions.

Ethiopia has been giving a precondition for talks before it pulls its troops from what has been confirmed as Eritrea’s sovereign territories like Badme by the UN boarder commission while Eritrea has been calling on the international community to enforce the binding resolution and force Ethiopia to pull its troops from its sovereign territories.
