The Sudanese government has launched a rounding up campaign on Eritreans in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
According to the news confirmed by Radio Erena sources from the area, the rounding up is widely conducted by the Sudanese Secrete Service agents in the localities of Sahafa where Eritreans popularly live at and that they are taken to various police stations.
The detained Eritreans were forced to pay 80 Sudanese pounds for temporary picture ID cards and were reported to have been released, added the sources.
The sources also pointed out that the ID card fee was previously only 20 pounds.
Meanwhile, the United Nation has urged the Sudanese government to intensify its rescue operation to save the 14 kidnapped Eritreans on the 4th of June while crossing to the country’s refugee camp of Shagerab and bring their captors to justice.
The 14 Eritreans including women and children have been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen and could not be traced.
The refugee camps in the Sudan are found to be in great danger as the government of Sudan failed to enforce security in the camps, which have become the corruption hubs for its military commanders.
According to the UN statement, 6 Eritreans who jumped and tried to escape out of a refugee NGO marked vehicle were wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle with 49 refugees on board in bound to Shagerab refugee camp.
Although the Sudanese government and the UNHCR have taken repeated initiatives to stop the human trafficking in the Eastern part of the country, no encouraging results have been scored to date.
The government has said to form a special court to prosecute criminals involved in human trafficking and that anyone found guilty of that crime would be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. However, nothing has practically been implemented as of yet.
The Eastern region of the country is isolated from the central government in Khartoum and the region has reported to have record high score of corruption by the administration officials and military commanders.
