Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church Abune Anotnios passes away

The reverend, Abune Antonios, Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church Passed away today in Asmara after 15 years in-home custody.

The late Patriarch, who was in his mid-nineties was denied the right to receive medical care abroad, despite the international call for his release.

Patriarch Antonios has been an ardent fighter for the freedom of his Church and community against government interference.

He was forced to leave his post and a pro-government Patriarch was appointed in his place, which was widely rejected by the Church’s followers.

Radio Erena extends deep sympathy and condolences on the demise of the Patriarch and to the Eritrean people for the loss of a symbol of popular and religious resistance.
