Eritrea’s Meskeb Debesay elected best African Cyclist of the Year 2014

Eritrean cyclist Mekseb Debesay (Bike Aid-Ride) was elected best African Cyclist of the Year 2014 on Monday. The award is organized by the La Tropicale Amissa Bongo and the winner elected by a jury including five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault.

According to event organizers, Mekseb won with 68 points ahead of last years winner Louis Meintjes (MTN Qhubeka) 51 points and Natnael Berhane (Europcar) 41 points – winner of the Best African Cyclist title in 2012.

 

The 23-year-old Eritrean had a successful year winning the 2014 Tour d’Algérie as well as the 6th stage of the Tour of Rwanda from Huye to Kigali in November. Mekseb was also the overall winner of the 14th edition of the Grand Prix International Chantal Biya 2014.
