Constant reshuffling of Eritrea’s top leadership is indicative of instability in the government

Erena Radio sources in Eritrea report that President Isaias Afowerki’s endless reshuffling of ministers, regional administrators, and military commanders shows internal instability in Eritrea.

The president has constantly been arresting and reshuffling the military’s top brass, his cabinet ministers, and regional administrators– especially, following the mutiny at the Ministry of Information [known as Forto] on the 21st of January 2013.

As the mutiny marks its second anniversary, the reports further indicated the government still fears a similar incident might happen again.

However, in spite of all the reshuffling, two ministerial posts – Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Information, are reported to be vacant. It is normal to see for ministries without leaders for years at the Isaias Afowerki’s administration – the ministerial post at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was vacant for three years after the former minister – Mr. Ali Seid Abdela, died.

Similar reshuffling took place following the 2001 crackdown by the government on its former members of its cabinet ministers and military leadership who demanded reform.
