UNHCR’s reports that around 350 out of the 700 drowned in the Mediterranean Sea this past weeks were Eritreans.

The report by the UNHCR wasn’t, however, taken well by the Eritrean government. The minister of foreign affairs – Osman Saleh, has reportedly invited the organization’s resident representative in the country to his office and expressed his government’s opposition saying the UN is deliberately disseminating misguided information about Eritrea.

In the news that has been confirmed by Radio Erena’s diplomatic sources in Eritrea, in a discussion that took place on Thursday the 23rd of April, Osman Saleh told the UN representative that a lot of Ethiopians and others from the horn of Africa claim to be Eritreans in order to get political asylum in Europe.

The minister, who stressed out the conspiracy by western countries against his country as the main cause, also accused the UN as being a part of the conspiracy by distributing unverified news about Eritrean and Eritreans.

The minister further warned that the organization may be expelled from Eritrea, should it continue the “conspiracy”.

The UNHCR mission assured the minister that they would deliver the Eritrean government’s accusation to the organization’s headquarters in Geneva and highlighted that the organization’s mission is to advocate for refugees and that it has no political mission for or against Eritrea or other countries in the world.
