Radio Erena: 09 June 2015
Tension is high between Eritrean refugees in the Ethiopian refugee camp of Htsats and Ethiopians living in the area after an Ethiopian was found dead in the camp, reported Radio Erena sources.
The victim, who as suspected of infiltrating in to the camp for robbery, was allegedly beaten to death by Eritreans early Saturday morning the 6th of June. The victim was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.
Although the number of the suspects is not clearly known, there have been reported arrests made by the police and that residents of the neighboring village of Hatsits are getting ready for retaliation and as a result, police presence and members of the militia in the area have been increased.
Meanwhile, the UNHCR has reposted its flag in the refugee camp of Adi Harush, confirmed our sources from the camp.
According to the sources, the UNHCR had stopped its operations in the camp over a month ago and this had been a concern for many Eritrean refugees.
There are over 80,000 registered Eritrean refugees in four different refugee camps in Ethiopia, reported the UNHCR in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
However, many of these refugees take the risk of travelling to Sudan and other neighboring countries as there are hardly programs to rehabilitate them to a third country(ies).
