A Renowned Eritrean Journalist, Aron Berhane Passes Away due to COVID 19

Radio Erena: 03 May 2021

Aron Berhane the former editor-in-chief of Setit daily passed away in Canada due to Covid-19 complications.

Aron, who was on a trip abroad narrowly, escaped the notorious journalists’ purge, in September 2001 when the security forces shut down private press offices and rounded up all journalists.

Aron obtained a degree in Media studies from Asmara University and co-founded the famous private daily Setit. Living in Canada, he dedicated his time and effort to the cause of freedom of the press and for the release of his colleagues. He established the active website “Mefth” to address issues of freedom of the press and related rights.

Earlier, Eritrean journalism in the diaspora has also lost Milkias Mehretab, the former editor-in-chief of Qastdebena (the Rainbow) daily. Milkias passed away in the United States.

Radio Erena expresses its deepest sorrow and extends sincere condolences to the families of the deceased colleagues. May their souls rest in eternal peace.
