Eritreans in Europe and the United States are holding candlelight vigil in memory of those who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea and those beheaded in Libya by the ruthless organization that calls itself – ISIS.
Eritreans inside the country, however, are reported to suppress their grief and anger for fear of repercussions by the government.
Many people in Ethiopia, on the other, took their anger and grief to the streets of various cities and officially remembered their victims.
The Ethiopian government has also declared a three-day-state-of-grievance and ordered the flag to be raised at half post within the country and in all its embassies around the world in memory of their ISIS victims.
Although most of the victims in the Mediterranean Sea and the ISIS beheading are reported to be Eritreans, people in Eritrea weren’t able to openly express their grief and this shows how much people are terrorized by the dictatorial government of Isaias Afwerki.
Similarly, in 2013 the Eritrean people were forced to hush up when they lost 360 of their loved ones after their boat caught fire and capsized near the Italian coast of Lampedusa. While the Italian government declared a day-of-grievance in memory of those victims whose bodies are still located in the Sicilians morgues, the Eritrean government has not even published an official statement regarding those victims. Nor has it expressed its condolences to the victims’ families.
