21 Eritrean refugees from Shegerab Refugee Camp sank in Atbara River

21 Eritreans sank in an attempt to cross to the Sudanese capital – Khartoum when their small boat capsized in the Atbara River on Wednesday 23rd of December, reported Radio Erena sources from Shegerab refugee camp.

The Eritreans, who are believed to be from the Sudanese refugee camp of Shegerab, were trying to get to Kassala – the town where they would then have to take a bus to get to Khartoum.

 

According to the report from our sources, the victims were aided by human traffickers who used a small boat.

Eight bodies out of the 21 victims were recovered. Two people were rescued and taken to a local hospital called Girba. Hospital authorities indicate that their conditions are critical.

The reports further noted that the bodies of the remaining victims have not been recovered yet.
