African Union Special Envoy to Ethiopia Olusegun Obasanjo said that the presence of Eritrean troops in Tigray may seriously obstruct the peace efforts after singing of a peace deal in Pretoria last months between the Ethiopian Government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
The special envoy statement came after a meeting in Mekelle with top TPLF leaders. The Tigrayan officials laid a condition for disarming of their troops which is the immediate and complete withdrawal of Eritrean troops from the Ethiopian northern regions, as he said.
Obasanjo’s visit to Mekelle came two days after a telephone conversation between US secretary of state Antony Blinken with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in which the secretary asked for an ‘immediate cease-fire in Tigray.
Earlier, Tigray Forces’ leader Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede said that his troops will not think of giving up heavy arms while the Eritrean troops are still in Tigray.
The US, the African Union and the European Union have all called for an immediate withdrawal of Eritrean troops from Tigray.
