Italian authorities have put 24 suspected human traffickers and brokers of Eritrean, Ethiopian and other nationals among whom two are believed to be responsible for trafficking the 700 victims who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in the last five days.
According to the UNHCR citing eyewitness accounts from survivors, 350 out of the 700 victims are known to be Eritreans.
The UNHCR reports pointed out death in the Sea has increased 30 times compared to that of last year. As a result, the EU member states have intensified talks on the issue.
Meanwhile, 1000 people, including Eritreans and Ethiopians are reported to be prepared to take off the Libyan coast.
