The Eritrean Minister of Foreign Affairs – Osman Saleh and the director of political affairs of the PFDJ and advisor of the President – Yemane Gebreab met in Frankfurt, Germany with the Eritrean diplomatic corps in various European countries last Tuesday the 8th of April.
The meeting by Saleh and Gebreab circled around the new change on policy by the European Union toward Eritrea, widespread emigration in Eritrea and the recommendations by EU to mitigate it.
EU has pledged the Eritrean government over 300 million Euros worth development aid in an effort to help the government create jobs and other opportunities for the Eritrean youth that is believed to reduce emigration in the country.
The Eritrean diplomatic corps were also counseled on the demands by the EU in regards to the endless national service and records of grave human rights violations in the country.
Great Britain and most European countries state they have been informed by Eritrean diplomats that Eritrea has plans to bring down the endless national service in Eritrea to its original 18 month duration though no official statement has been released by the Eritrean government regarding this to date.
EU officials and the Eritrean government are reported to have continuously been talking about human rights issues, democratic reforms, emigration, and the pledged development aid to the Eritrean.
Meanwhile, Yeman Gebreab has spoken on the Eritrean political state of affairs and the country’s policy on the horn of Africa, at the international ‘Bruno Kreisky’ summit held in Vienna, Austria.
Director of African and Indian Ocean region affairs at the French ministry of foreign affairs – Jean Christophe Bayard and the head of the Austrian special delegation and coordinator of the summit – George Lenke have also spoken on the conditions in Africa.
