Radio Erena: 26 February 2015
Unaccompanied under age Eritreans are reported to be crossing the Mediterranean Sea to seek asylum in many European countries. The kids are said to be crossing over to neighboring Ethiopia and Sudan where they stay at the refugee camps there before taking on the risky routes to Europe.
The recent exodus has been covered by many global media outlets such as the BBC, Radio France International, Rai Uno and others.
Although the exact age of these asylum seekers couldn’t be verified, many estimate the average age to be between 16 and 17.
According to UNHCR reports, there are several unaccompanied children at the Ethiopian refugee camps of Enda Guna and the Sudanese camp of Shagerab.
Many attribute the ongoing emigration in Eritrea to the rampant human rights violations by the dictatorial regime and limitless national service. The limitless national service has now been imposed upon nationals of up to the age of 65.
