ERITREA: BUSINESSES THAT WERE CLOSED TO COMBAT COVID-19 BEGIN TO REOPEN

Radio Erena: 24 February 2021

Many commercial businesses that were forced to shut down in Eritrea in order to combat the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic are beginning to reopen.

A decision is yet to be made, however, on when restaurants, cafes and pubs would be able to reopen their doors to the public again.

Public transport services have not yet resumed although restrictions imposed to combat the spread of the virus have been gradually eased off.

Members of the public has been using bicycles and horse-drawn carriages for travel in the absence of public transportation that has been out of service for nearly ten months.

Speaking on the impact of the pandemic on the country’s economy, President Isaias said the impact had been insignificant as people were already living hand to mouth.

Nonetheless, the closure of commercial businesses and further restrictions on movements in order to curb down the spread of the virus has severely impacted the livelihoods of thousands of families.
