Eritrea Forced To Delay 2017/18 Academic Classes Due To Shortage of Teachers

Radio Erena: 05 October 2017

Many schools in various parts of Eritrea are reported to be delayed due to shortage of teachers.

According to sources from different parts of the country, the delay for the 2017/2018 academic year, which is mainly seen in the Southern and Anseba zones as well as remote rural areas of the country, is because majority of the teachers did not report back to their respective schools by mid-September as announced by the Eritrean Ministry of Education.

This comes to show, schools, like other government sectors, are faced with lack of human resources, noted the sources.

The teachers, who are trained at the military training camp - known as Sawa [located in the Western part of the country] are not given adequate professional training and are mostly deployed to these schools without their will. Consequently, they don't report back to the schools willingly and on time and some are also believed to cross over to neighboring countries.

According to reports by the Eritrean Ministry of Education, several schools in different zones of the country and remote rural areas were nearly forced to close classes due to shortage of teachers during the 2016/17 academic year.
